Making a few adjustments to how you use water at home can have big impacts on the amount of water you use - and can reduce your water bill! Follow these practical steps to conserve water: Water your lawn in the early morning or in the evening, when temperatures are cooler and water isn't lost to evaporation. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk. Adjust your sprinklers so pavement isn't being watered. Use a timer to keep track of how long and how much you're watering your lawn - keeping in mind that if there's water running off of your lawn and into sewer, then you'll be watching water (and money) go down the drain. There are a number of steps that can be taken to ensure that you have a healthy lawn. The first is to mow high, where you are cutting no more than 1/3 of the grass blade. This encourages deep roots and health grass that withstands drought and minimizes weeds. Mowing with a sharp blade is also helpful – as they give a cleaner cut and reduces the susceptibility of the grass to disease. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn will return nutrients to the soil and leads to healthier grass. Watering deeply, rather than frequently, will encourage deep roots that withstand drought.
